First off, never be afraid to ask too many questions. A breeder should always be knowledgeable of their breed standards, health issues, nutrition, exercise and grooming to get puppies off on the right start, current trends and thinking in vaccination protocols, and the basic care and well being of the dogs they breed. Many breeders include in the packet with each new puppy a supply of informational materials to begin the education of the new owners. The breeder should be the very best source for general information and knowledge on the breed. In addition there are several good breed books available from local book stores, Amazon, some of the big catalogue pet supply houses, and other book suppliers. There are also some specific books and chronicles published that are available at the national specialties, publishers, the national club, and some regional clubs. Below is a sampling of the selection available to give the new Airedale owner a source of information about the breed. In addition to specific books on the Airedale Terrier there are many books about raising puppies and training them. Many of them are good, not everyone will have all the preferences or knowledge of a breeder of Airedales through their own experiences of many years in the breed, and some are totally not really written with terriers in mind. These books should be a start to give ample information into the wonderful world of Airedale Terriers. The New Owners Guide to Airedale Terriers by Betty-Anne Stenmark (2002) The Airedale Terrier Today (Book of the Breed) by Janet Huxley (October 2000) Airedale Terrier (Pet Owner's Guide) by Janet Huxley (September 2000) The New Airedale Terrier by June Dutcher and Janet Framke (April 1991) Airedale Terriers: An Owners Companion by Mary Squash (December 1991) The ATCA (Airedale Terrier Club of America) is the national club of the breed and has information for those interested in the Airedale and numerous publications as well as the quarterly newsletter, The American Airedale. The club website is www.airedale.org The AKC (American Kennel Club) has publications, videos, books, and more of the Airedale Terrier. The Gazette is the official magazine of the AKC and it features breed articles monthly. Information from the AKC is found at www.AKC.org Attending local dog shows is always a good place to find specific breed publications as generally at least one vendor at the show will have a book collection. Additionally, many of the pet stores and catalogues offer a fair selection of books on most breeds. Also there are numerous regional breed specific clubs in many regions of the country that offer meetings, training, and education for those interested in learning more about the Airedale Terrier. The Internet is of course another informative way to gather information about the breed. Read carefully and check the sources as not all information on the Internet is always accurate or factual. There are several large mail order pet suppliers who carry a wonderful line of products and are generally less expensive than the local or chain pet stores. It is a good idea to order a catalogue from them so even if you buy from a local retailer having a catalogue to see a product is oftentimes very helpful.
